What is accreditation?

Accreditation is the result of achieving established standards of quality and excellence as recognized by that agency granting such accreditation. Accreditation is a voluntary process of self-regulation and peer review adopted by the educational community. Institutions of higher education have voluntarily entered into associations to evaluate each other in accordance with an institution’s mission. Most accreditation is institutional, meaning an entire college is accredited. This gives credibility to the college as a whole. The United States Department of Education has divided the United States into 6 regions—each with a regional accrediting body such as SACSCOC which is the same accrediting body recognizing institutions that OCTC students transfer to such as Western Kentucky University, University of Kentucky, Murray State University,  Brescia University and Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Why is accreditation important?

With an accredited institution, a student has assurance of receiving a quality education and gaining recognition by other colleges and by employers of the course credits and degrees earned from the institution. Accreditation is an affirmation that a college provides a quality education that the general public has the right to expect and that the educational community recognizes.
